Western Ave.
2024
Western Ave at a length 28 miles is the longest street in the Chicagoland area that runs south to north. Throughout those 28 miles it goes through a wide variety of different classes, ethnicities, zoning, and qualities of roads and sidewalks. For this project I set out to walk the length of the street twice, once on each side of the street, yet always walking with the flow of traffic. I originally wanted to highlight these very distinct differences throughout the length of Western Avenue by drawing attention to the financial class differences from south to north along with the ethnic groupings of communities along the street. Showing this through the differences in the quality of the infrastructure along the road as well as the road and sidewalk itself and the differences in the people who live along the street. But, in an attempt to keep my any personal bias out of the project I approached it by giving myself a set amount of photos, 4, 36 exposure rolls, then evenly dividing the amount of photos I had available by how many miles I walked, roughly 2.5 photos per mile. Then, I simply looked for what pulled my interest rather than finding things that would communicate a preconceived narrative. By doing this I found that my photos tended to highlight the similarities along all of Western Avenue rather than the differences, well also still showing the many different ways this road is used along its 28 miles, from industrial, to residential, to business districts. I felt as if this showed a more complete picture of Western Ave rather than reiterating the already told story of economic differences from south to north. I also took this as an opportunity to continue to explore my eye as a photographer in seeing what pulls my attention and focus when exploring a new space. Overall, I think this project is important because in a time where there is great division in every aspect of life this project seeks to highlight and show the simple things which demonstrate how similar we all are and how similar every part of this long street really is at a fundamental level.
